HOW DID WE GET MODERN DAY DRAGON MAGIC?

From Draco to Draconic Wicca: The Evolution of Dragon Magic

The linguistic root of Draconian originates with Draco of Athens (7th century BCE), the first recorded Athenian lawmaker whose severe legal code gave rise to the term “draconian.” Though not connected to dragon mythology directly, his name became a symbolic bridge between dragons and destruction.

By the medieval and Renaissance eras, the dragon evolved within alchemy and Hermeticism as the Ouroboros, representing transformation, eternal life, and the cyclical nature of creation and destruction.

Early Historical Figures In Dragon Magic And Draconian Orders (Circa: 1890 - 1980)

Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) //  English occultist and founder of Thelema. Known as “The Great Beast 666,” Crowley’s maxim “Do what thou wilt” defined the birth of modern occultism. His serpent symbolism and Left-Hand-Path philosophy laid early groundwork for the draconic archetype in contemporary magick.

Kennith Grant

Kenneth Grant (1924–2011) //  British occultist and direct student of Aleister Crowley. As Crowley’s literary heir, Grant preserved and expanded Thelemic philosophy, emphasizing serpentine and draconian imagery as symbols within esoteric tradition.

Thomas Karlsson (1972 - Present) // Swedish occultist, author, and founder of Dragon Rouge (Order of the Dragon). Building upon Kenneth Grant’s Typhonian philosophy, Karlsson formalized the modern Draconian current through Qliphothic Kabbalah, Left-Hand Path mysticism, and Nordic esotericism. His work  shapedmuch of what is now referred to as “Traditional Draconianism.”

DJ Conway

DJ Conway (1939–2019) // American author and practitioner of Wicca and Paganism. Conway introduced dragon magick to the modern pagan revival through accessible texts: Dancing With Dragons and Mystical Dragon Magick.

Michael W. Ford

Michael W. Ford (1976–Present) //  American occult author and Luciferian philosopher. Ford reimagined Draconian and serpentine symbolism through a modern Satanic and Left-Hand-Path lens, founding The Black Order of the Dragon in the early 2000s to merge Luciferian self-deification with Draconian current magick.

Asenath Mason

Asenath Mason (1972 – Present) //  Polish occult author of the Draconian Ritual Book and founder of The Temple of the Ascending Flame. Mason expanded upon the works of Kenneth Grant and Michael W. Ford, further developing Draconian and serpentine symbolism within Left-Hand-Path philosophy.

Azura DragonFaether, The Draconic Priestess

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most commonly asked questions about Dragon Magic and  Draconian Traditions.

Azura DragonFaether, known as The Draconic Priestess, is recognized as the founder of modern-day dragon traditions.

Azura DragonFaether’s legacy as a founder of modern Dragon Magick traditions is extensively documented. She began with The Draconic Path (2009), born from years of journaling her personal bonds with dragons. In 2013, she introduced Draconic Wicca, blending Wiccan seasonal rites with elemental dragon guardians. A year later came Dragon Alchemy (2014), built upon her 13-planetary-dragon system exploring cosmic transmutation. In 2015, she unveiled Draconianism, centered on spiritual rebirth through rainbow dragonfire and alchemy of the soul. Finally, in 2017, she founded The Hatchling Clan, a global community dedicated to preserving the magick and mythology of dragons and other sacred creatures of legend within modern spirituality.

Before her work, “dragon magick” existed only as fragmented occult references scattered among earlier figures such as Aleister Crowley, Kenneth Grant, Michael W. Ford, Asenath Mason, and D.J. Conway. These sources drew on serpentine or draconic symbolism but lacked a coherent system, inclusive ethics, or trauma-informed spiritual safety.

Azura DragonFaether changed that. Drawing from her lifelong connection with dragons, her writings, and her digital teachings, she organized dragon-based spirituality into teachable, repeatable, and publicly available systems. She grounded her practices in mythology, linguistic etymology, and decolonial reform, distinguishing her work from earlier male-led or paywalled traditions.

Because she provided the first comprehensive, transparent, and community-centered structure for Dragon Magick, complete with historical context, accessible rituals, and a global community, Azura DragonFaether stands as the founder and reformer of modern dragon traditions in the digital and spiritual age.

No, Traditional Draconianism is not an ancient religion or practice. Traditional Draconianism refers to the currents and orders that predate The Draconic Priestess.

The term “Draconianism” as a spiritual or occult system originated in the 20th century, not in antiquity. While the word Draconian itself comes from Draco, the Athenian lawmaker of 7th century BCE Greece, famous for his extremely harsh legal code, the modern spiritual use of the term began much later.

Traditional Draconianism emerged within Western occultism, drawing heavily from Aleister Crowley, Kenneth Grant, and later Thomas Karlsson of the Dragon Rouge order (founded in the 1980s). These systems incorporated elements of the Left-Hand Path, Qliphothic Kabbalah, Luciferianism, and kundalini mysticism, often blending dragon myths together. Kept within secret initiatory orders, male-led hierarchies, and paywalled esoteric teachings it was often unethical.

Although these traditions reference ancient dragon myths, symbols, and philosophies, they are not direct continuations of any historical dragon religion. Instead, they represent modern reinterpretations inspired by mythology and occult philosophy.
